  • Small Learning Environment, Big Impact
    Factors such as educational philosophy, technology, standardized testing, and addressing the achievement gap are catalyzing a shift in educational delivery methods from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning. This session focuses on differences and similarities between the unique situations of various approaches and the support the facility can have of implementation.

  • Urban Success: The Grand Rapids, Michigan Story

  • Science Spaces for Project Based Learning
    Concentration on spaces, in addition to science lab/classrooms, that enhance the learning experience via project-based learning will be the focus of this session. The new edition of NSTA Guide to Planning School Science Facilities has sections on such spaces at both the middle and high school levels and will be discussed. Photos of a variety of such spaces around the country will be presented

  • Early Childhood as a Learning Community
    Learning for the youngest members of society to prepare them for tomorrow's world – how form should follow function in a constructivist environment.

    Universal Pre-School has hit the political stage during this election year. It is an idea whose time has come. Join this session to learn more about appropriate learning resources that support and promote learning activities for young children and the best type of facility that would provide for these learning activities.

  • Health and Economic Benefits of Improving the Built Environment of American Public Schools
    Schools not only influence academic endeavors of students, but can also affect their health. This presentation will demonstrate the cost-benefit of environmental factors and health outcomes as they relate to the built environment.

  • Operational and Facility Issues of Small high Schools in Multiplex Facilities
    Small learning communities are being implemented across the country. The Milwaukee Public School has developed a model which addresses both the physical and operational issues associated with this "Multiplex" model. Learn practical solutions that have been successfully implemented in high school reform efforts.

  • Preserving Our Community's Greatest Asset: Transforming a High School
    Focus on the process of modernizing a traditional high school to create a 21st century active learning environment. A process of Community engagement, dedicated school board and administration, business partnerships, fundraising campaign, referendum, and national design talent developed a vision for the future of the Oak Ridge School District. The Oak Ridge High School was accepted as a Model School in the Bill Gates & Bill Daggett's Successful Schools Conference.

  • Long Beach Unified School District: Redefining High Schools Size and Type
    The high school presentation will explore how the Long Beach Unified School Facility Master Planning Process was used as the impetus for redefining 9-12 school facilities. The presentation will highlight input and participation of Long Beach School District administrative officials and academic staff as well as steering committees, the community advisory committee, and the community at-large.

In this hands-on workshop James Biehle, AIA and LaMoine Motz, PhD, the co-authors of the recently published NSTA Guide to Planning School Science Facilities, Second Edition will explore some guidelines for planning school science facilities for safe, accessible, hands-on, project-based science education. Participants in small groups will then be asked to plan a suite for elementary, middle or high school science and present their findings to the group for discussion, brainstorming and development of overall recommendations for future facilities. Technology applications and sustainable design issues in science facility planning will also be discussed.
